A recent study found that an inability to stand on one leg for 10 seconds later in life is linked to nearly double the risk of death from any cause within the next decade. The research, published on June 22, 2022 in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, suggested that this simple balance test may be useful to include in routine physical exams for those of middle to older age.
As you age, you may see a decline in your physical fitness, muscle strength, and flexibility—but balance tends to be fairly well-preserved into your 50s. However, at that point, to most people, balance starts to decrease rapidly. Previous research has found the inability to stand on one leg is also linked to a greater risk of falls and cognitive decline.
While the research was observational and doesn’t reveal cause and effect, being able to balance on one leg is important for a number of reasons, particularly for those who are older. You may need to balance on one leg as you climb or descend stairs, move out of a car, or perform other everyday tasks.
The good news is; balance can be substantially improved with specific exercises and re-training.
